On the gravitational terms of the k-ɛ and other turbulence models

Abstract

The behavior of four turbulent flow models is examined under conditions of uniform shear and stable stratification. The models are the standard k-ɛ model, the realizable k-ɛ model, the RNG k-ɛ model and the Reynolds stress model. It is shown that this behavior is very much dependent on the gravitational production term in the turbulent dissipation equation, about which there is insufficient understanding in the literature. It is recommended that setting this term equal to zero for stable stratification may be the optimal solution, given the uncertainty of the data against which all models should be calibrated.
