Abstract

Wireless capsule endoscopy represents a major milestone in the evolution of small bowel enteroscopy, and enables visualization of the entire small bowel in a noninvasive manner, without necessity for sedation. Indications for the test include, but are not limited to evaluation of obscure gastrointestinal bleed, Crohn disease, small bowel tumors, polyposis syndromes, and Celiac disease. Modifications of the capsule also facilitate its utilization in screening and surveillance for Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal varices, and colorectal cancer. This article is a review of the indications and recommendations regarding the role of capsule endoscopy in current clinical practice.
