Trans-anal total meso-rectal resection (TaTME) is useful for patients in whom a transabdominal approach is expected to be technically challenging. This is the first report of resection of rectal cancer in the rectal remnant after Hartmann’s surgery using only a trans-anal procedure. Using the TaTME technique, the rectal remnant can be resected without laparotomy, which makes it possible to perform less-invasive surgery in cases where adhesions are expected in the abdominal cavity and in patients in poor general condition.
