Abstract:

Dissipation in solid friction is studied as a function of the elastic properties of the two sliding surfaces. The two surfaces have been constructed by embedding macroscopic asperities in an elastic layer. It is shown that when the surfaces are rigid the energy dissipation is smaller than in the elastic case. The scaling of the friction force as a function of the asperity number is also studied.
