This section is the special issue for the 6th LASER DISPLAY and LIGHTING CONFERENCE (LDC2017) held at Pacifico Yokohama, Yokohama, Japan, on April 19–21, 2017 to share information on laser display/lighting and related technologies. This special section contains some of the papers contributed to LDC2017. These papers were reviewed and accepted according to the editorial policy of Optical Review.

Laser display is an emerging hot field, drawing attention from entertainment, education and business sectors for use in signage, cinema, and television. Laser illumination is also fascinating users/customers in automobile lighting, store lighting, and event illumination. This special issue covers a wide range of the element technologies: red-, green- and blue-light sources, modulators, speckle controllers, and color management. Deep and detailed discussion is engaged on speckle control/measurement in this special issue.

LDC’17 was co-sponsored by The Optical Society of Japan (OSJ) and The Japan Society of Applied Physics and organized by The Laser Display Technology (LDT) Group of the Optical Society of Japan, JSAP.
