The following section is the special issue for the 10th International Conference on Optics-photonics Design and Fabrication (ODF’16) held on February 28–March 2, 2016 at Weingarten, Germany. The special section contains contributed papers based on the presentations at ODF’16. These papers were reviewed and accepted according to the editorial policy of Optical Review.

The ODF conference has been held biyearly since 1998, and is an international forum for engineers and scientists in the field of optics-photonics design and fabrication to exchange their ideas and achievements to promote future progress in the field.

ODF’16 was organized by Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten, University of Applied Sciences and Optics Design Group of the Optical Society of Japan (OSJ). ODF’16 was sponsored by German Society of Applied Optics (DGaO), European Optical Society (EOS) and the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP). We sincerely thank 29 other organizations including International Commission for Optics (ICO), Chinese Optical Society (COS), the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), Taiwan Photonics Society, Optical Society of America (OSA), and Optical Society of Korea (OSK) for their cooperation and technical cosponsorship.

At ODF’16, the plenary session, a special session on “Illumination and Nonimaging Optics” and the four serial sessions on Optical Design/Simulation, Optical Components/Devices, Optical Systems and New Technologies were provided. The total number of papers reached 105 from 15 countries, and the total number of participants was 177.

Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all who contributed to ODF’ 16.
