Content

Hydrogeology Journal appeared in six issues containing a total of 674 pages and 47 major articles, including 22 Papers and 24 Reports, as well as Technical Notes and Book Reviews. The final issue of 2002 also contained the annual volume index. Hydrogeology Journal (HJ) is an international forum for hydrogeology and related disciplines. Authors in 2002 were from about 30 countries. Articles advanced hydrogeologic science and described hydrogeologic systems in many regions worldwide. These articles focused on 22 countries: Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Portugal, Qatar, Switzerland, Syria, Turkey, UK, and the USA. The Guest Editors of the 2002 HJ theme issue on "Groundwater Recharge", Bridget R. Scanlon and Peter G. Cook, assembled a highly relevant and sought-after collection of papers from eminent authors on wide-ranging aspects of the subject.

HJ procedures

During 2002, HJ underwent some organizational changes. Perry Olcott began his term as Managing Editor (ME), sharing the increasing duties with continuing ME, Robert Schneider. The new HJ Editorial Office began operations in a UK location and is being ably managed by Christine Watson. The office is HJ's central point, organizing and tracking the flow of all articles in process. HJ's article submittal and review process became electronic in August 2002 with the implementation of the online manuscript processing system called "Manuscript Central". Now everything—submittal, review, acceptance, and proofing—is done online. There have been some start-up difficulties concerning electronic formats of text and figures, but overall, the new system seems to be working well. Comments from authors, reviewers, and readers are welcomed. Publication of each HJ article continues in two places: as 'Online First" on the Springer-Verlag LINK website for HJ as soon as the author has completed proofing, and in the next available printed issue.

Thanks!

The success and international reputation of the journal are due in large part to the many who contributed to its production. Most important are the authors from all parts of the world. The efforts of the publisher, Springer-Verlag, especially Wolfgang Engel and Susanne Schemann, are much appreciated. Susanne Schemann is giving up her role as Production Editor in order to take care of her new family. We offer her congratulations and good wishes, and look forward to working with her successor Petra Möws. Assistance in the production of publishable manuscripts from articles that were technically acceptable, but that required major language editing, was provided by William D. Johnson, Jr. We are most grateful to the volunteer HJ Associate Editors, listed on page A2 in this issue, for their involvement in conducting and arranging for reviews, and for giving advice on the quality of submitted articles. In addition to the Associate Editors, many others volunteered their time and talents to review manuscripts. We are also grateful to Michel Bakalowicz and Alfredo Perez-Paricio, who have been translating abstracts into French and Spanish for several years and who continue to do so. At the end of this message is a list of 147 technical reviewers of manuscripts processed in 2002 (not including the Associate Editors). Many thanks to all for your valuable support!

Abstract translators sought

At this time, due to the increasing numbers of articles being published, HJ is seeking additional volunteer abstract translators to French and Spanish. Interested persons should kindly contact the Executive Editor.
