In this paper we describe the tarsal tunnel syndrome with reference to our own experience in 10 cases and the literature. Compared with the numerous injuries involving the ankle and foot, the diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome is rare. In the case of a painful foot of unknown aetiology, the differential diagnosis should therefore include tarsal tunnel syndrome. Our presentation discusses the aetiology and pathology of the tarsal tunnel syndrome, and particularly that caused by trauma. We also describe an effective therapeutic approach based on surgical decompression.
