Abstract
Diligence in designing graphs has a marked impact on the acceptance of scientific findings. A professionally sketched figure is simple and clear, stressing its function as a vehicle for transporting information, not artwork. “Chart-junk” such as colors, shading, and three-dimensionality reduces data density and obscures the scientific key message. Bar charts should always contain a precisely defined index of error (e.g., standard deviation). Box-and-whiskers plots provide high data density and depict the center and distribution of data. Color- and space-wasting figures such as pie-charts should be avoided in a scientific presentation. Reporting study results in graphical, tabular and text format should be strategically planned. Presenting the primary outcome as a perfect figure enables readers to grasp the key message quickly, and may also lead to sustainable dissemination of results within the scientific community.
