Zusammenfassung

Verletzungen der Halswirbelsäule stellen wichtige Ursachen für anhaltende funktionelle Störungs- und Beschwerdebilder, schwere körperliche Beeinträchtigungen oder Todesfolgen nach Unfällen dar. Nicht immer ist die Schwere dieser Verletzungen unmittelbar nach dem Trauma zu erkennen. Dies gilt insbesondere für Frakturen im Bereich des 2. Halswirbelkörpers, da Betroffene auch bei mechanisch instabilen Situationen über einen lokalen Schmerz hinaus mitunter kaum Symptome beklagen. Aus diesem Grund stellt die systematische Untersuchung des Axis einen integralen Bestandteil der Versorgung Verunfallter dar. Der Einsatz moderner Diagnostik, die folgerichtige Anwendung adäquater Behandlungsverfahren sowie die Einrichtung spezieller Rehabilitationszentren zur Nachsorge führen zur Verbesserung der Prognose des Heilungsverlaufs nach Wirbelsäulen- und Rückenmarkverletzungen. Die Berufsgenossenschaften binden sich dabei entsprechend ihres spezifischen Auftrags der umfassenden Versorgung bezüglich der medizinischen und sozialen Belange Verunfallter ein.

Abstract

Injuries of the cervical spine are significant in the causation of persisting functional disorders and symptom clusters, severe physical handicaps or even fatal sequelae following accidents. It is not always possible to appreciate the severity of these injuries immediately after the trauma is sustained. This is particularly true in the case of fractures in the area of C-2, since even in the case of mechanical instability the persons affected sometimes report hardly any symptoms beyond localized pain. For this reason, systematic examination of the axis is an integral to the care needed for accident victims. The use of modern diagnostic techniques, consistent application of appropriate treatment procedures and the setting up of special rehabilitation centres for after-care have led to an improved prognosis for the course of recovery following injuries to the spine and spinal cord. The employers' liability insurance associations are involved in all this, in keeping with their specific duty of comprehensive care of accident victims with reference to their medical and social interests.
