Abstract
Successful treatment of an ankle fracture depends on a thorough understanding both of the fracture pattern and of the biomechanics of the ankle joint. Classification of the fracture with due consideration for its pathogenesis, as practised by Lauge-Hansen, combined with a sound understanding of ankle biomechanics should enable the surgeon to set up a treatment plan preoperatively in which equal importance is attached to the lesions of bone and of ligament(s).
