Zusammenfassung

Die ersten Handtransplantationen haben ein weltweites Echo hervorgerufen und eine intensive Diskussion sowohl über den Sinn des Eingriffs als auch den Benefit und das inhärente Risiko für den Patienten ausgelöst. In diesem Artikel werden der derzeitige Stand dieses klinisch-experimentellen Eingriffs, ¶die geeignetste Indikation und die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen dargestellt. Zukünftige Entwicklungen im Bereich risikoärmerer Immunsuppressiva werden möglicherweise die allgemeine Akzeptanz dieses Verfahrens schon in naher Zukunft erhöhen.

Abstract

The first publications reporting hand transplantations have initiated a highly emotional discussion among hand and transplant surgeons about the rationale for the operation and also the benefit to the patient and the risks inherent in the procedure. This article describes the current status of this experimental clinical procedure, the scientific basis for it and the situations in which it is presently considered to be indicated. Further developments leading to new immunosuppressant drugs with fewer and less serious potential side effects will probably improve general acceptance of this procedure in the near future.
