Abstract
In an animal study, the capacity of hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics for osteoconduction was examined in cortical trephine defects in the tibial diaphysis of minipigs. The HA cylinders used had a spongy structure with interconnecting open pores and did not demonstrate any osteoconductive effect in the initial phase, resulting in a overall poor healing of the bone defects. In the late phase of defect regeneration bone was found to cover implant structures preferentially. This result can be interpreted as secondary osteoconduction, or even as an affinity of nonresorbed HA implants for bone based on the chemical and crystallographic relationship between HA and bone mineral.
