Già docente di Informatica teorica all’Università di Palermo e di Cibernetica all’Università di Perugia, ha diretto dal 2002 al 2009 l’Istituto di Cibernetica “Eduardo Caianiello” del Cnr a Napoli. Fisico di formazione, i suoi interessi di ricerca hanno riguardato principalmente i problemi legati alla presenza di incertezza, approssimazione e vaghezza nelle scienze dell’informazione, anche nella loro relazione con altre discipline. In questo contesto ha introdotto e sviluppato la teoria delle “misure di fuzziness”, esaminandone anche alcuni aspetti epistemologici. Negli ultimi quindici anni si è, inoltre, interessato al problema del rapporto tra ricerca scientifica di base e modelli produttivi di un Paese.
