Jahrhunderts in England.

Abstract

James Wardrop was one of the famous surgeons of the nineteenth century in England. He was born in Scotland and studied in Edinburgh; however, he soon moved to London in order to hear the lectures by Abernethy and Cooper at the Royal College. During his study travels through Europe he also went to Vienna where he was introduced to ophthalmology by the famous Georg Joseph Beer. Furthermore, in London he became acquainted with all fields of surgery. In 1825 he took up the issue of aneurysms of the supra-aortic vessels, a concept of the French surgeon Pierre Brasdor, to ligate the artery at the distal end of the aneurysm furthest from the heart and to leave the further course of the disease with thrombosis of the aneurysmal sac up to nature. On 5 July 1825 he could inform the Royal College of Surgeons of the first successful operation. Wardrop achieved a high reputation at the English Royal Court. The last conversations with King George IV have been preserved verbatim; however, there were obviously also intrigues.
