Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
Diabetes-associated complications, such as diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) have a huge negative impact on the health-related quality of life of diabetic patients.
Objective
This article gives a brief summery of the quality of life of patients with DFU and presents instruments to assess the disease-specific quality of life in these patients.
Material and methods
A review of the literature was carried out.
Results
The presence of DFU is associated with a poor quality of life in all aspects of physical, mental and social well-being. Reduced mobility has been noted as the major burden. Healing of DFUs is associated with improvement in the quality of life. Successful minor amputations do not have a negative impact on the quality of life. The DFU scale (DFS) and the NeuroQoL are valuable instruments for assessing the disease-specific quality of life in patients with DFU in studies and clinical practice.
Conclusion
The DFU has a strong negative impact on the quality of life. Successful therapy is associated with a marked improvement in the self-assessed quality of life. The available disease-specific questionnaires are helpful to assess the value of new therapies.
