Abstract
Depictions of the anatomy of saphenous veins have been very diverse in medical history. Since ultrasound was introduced to investigate superficial veins, the existence of a membranous layer above the saphenous trunks has been rediscovered. Caggiati described it as fascia saphena, which delimitates the saphenous compartment. The fascia saphena covers the spahenous trunks and is anchored to the underlying fascia muscularis, so that it creates a tunnel along the course of the saphenous veins. Not only these findings, but also the different histology of the veins seem to differentiate the saphenous trunks clearly from the side branches. Duplex ultrasound examinations of healthy volunteers and legs with varicose veins support the anatomical findings and allow a first classification of the courses followed by saphenous veins as well as their normal variation. These observations invite to further investigations on the anatomy and physiology of superficial veins. The findings of Caggiati and Ricci have been combined in this overview.
Notes
