Zusammenfassung

Hintergrund

Viele Patienten mit einer malignen Erkrankung wünschen sich eine begleitende naturheilkundliche Therapie. Ein Hauptziel ist hierbei die Stärkung des Immunsystems. Substanzen aus der Naturheilkunde sind rezeptfrei erhältlich und werden von vielen Patienten zusätzlich zur konventionellen onkologischen Therapie eingenommen.

Ziel der Arbeit

Darstellung von gängigen Methoden aus dem Gebiet der komplementären und alternativen Medizin (KAM) und deren Schadenspotenzial.

Material und Methoden

Narrative Übersichtsarbeit.

Ergebnisse

Mehr als die Hälfte aller Tumorpatienten nutzen KAM. Trotzdem findet das Thema in der Praxis zu wenig Beachtung, obwohl für eine Vielzahl von naturheilkundlichen Präparaten und Behandlungsmethoden zum Teil komplexe Nebenwirkungen, Interaktionen und Organtoxizitäten bis hin zu vital bedrohlichen Situationen beschrieben sind.

Diskussion

Wissen zum Thema KAM und den assoziierten potenziellen Risiken ist für Onkologen wichtig. Häufiger als üblich sollten wir Nebenwirkungen nicht automatisch den onkologischen Therapien zuordnen, sondern bei Patienten hinterfragen, ob die KAM als (Teil‑)Ursache eine Rolle spielen könnte.

Dangerous situations through complementary and alternative medicine

Abstract

Background

Many patients with cancer want an accompanying naturopathic therapy. One of the main goals is to strengthen the immune system. Substances from naturopathy are available without a prescription and are taken by many patients in addition to the conventional oncological therapy.

Objectives

Presentation of common methods in the field of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and their damage potential.

Materials and methods

Narrative review.

Results

More than half of all cancer patients use CAM. Despite this, the topic receives too little attention in practice, although partly complex side effects, interactions and organ toxicity, including life-threatening situations, have been described for a large number of naturopathic preparations and treatment methods.

Discussion

Knowledge about CAM and the associated potential risks is important for oncologists. More often than usual, we should not automatically associate side effects with oncological therapies, but ask patients whether CAM might play a role as a (partial) cause.
