Abstract
Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in patients with gastrointestinal tumours, but also often appear during the course of other oncological diseases. Triggers of the symptoms are disease progression, developing complications and sequelae of the illness, or side-effects of therapeutic regimens. Examples of the symptoms suffered by tumour patients are anorexia-frequently aggravated by vomiting and nausea-hiccoughs caused by overextension of the stomach, icterus, ascites, obstinate constipation, and mechanical and paralytic ileus. A useful therapy also in palliative medicine depends on the most accurate possible appreciation of why these symptoms have appeared.
