Summary

The messy syndrome (Diogenes syndrome) is present when a person is unable to keep order with their household, time or finances. Such persons are also referred to as messies. Useless objects are hoarded in extreme quantities. It is not clear whether compulsive hoarding is a condition in itself, or simply a symptom of other related conditions. Compulsive hoarding behaviour can occur in a variety of psychiatric disorders. Therapeutic strategies range from support, coaching, selfhelp-groups, psychotherapy (cognitive-behaviour therapy) to medication (selective-serotonin-reuptake inhibitors).
