Summary
Paraphilias are hard to explain as to their genesis, if one is limited to ontogenetic development. Key experiences may be elucidating in some cases, but they cannot be found in the history of every single case. The author proposes an explanation model on a phylogenetic basis, following up the natural history of dominance and submission behaviour in the reproductive behaviour of various animals. It shows, that some of these behavioural patterns resembling sadism/masochism, represent a certain survival advantage for their bearers while reproducing themselves, which is rewarded by a genetic passing on in the chain of evolution.
