Summary
Headache is a common ailment found not only at the medical specialist's office, but also at the general practitioner's (5 % in the general population). Headaches come in multiple variations and have multiple causal factors. Thus, relying solely on one method of treatment or on one cause proves contra-productive. Only through the multifactorial view and by employing therapeutic combinations can this crux of patients and doctors be resolved. Remaining problematic patients need to be accompanied by psychotherapy. They cannot be left to hopelessness and/or substance abuse, but one has to be willing to try out new approaches and committed to keeping them on the therapeutic path (Fig. 1b).
