Summary

Correct interpretation of the ophthalmoscopic finding “small disc” gives an important hint of the visual development in children and is associated with other anomalies of the central nervous system and endocrine abnormalities. Hypoplasia of the optic nerve is one of the most common anomalies of the optic disc. In the ophthalmoscopic examination the optic nerve head appears small.

Hypoplasia of the optic nerve is one of the most common causes of severe visual impairment in children. Children with ONH should be screened for endocrine abnormalities as well as congenital anomalies of the central nervous system. ONH represents a demanding challenge for early interdisciplinary cooperation between pediatriacian and ophthalmologist.
