The development of a new method for the evaluation of reading acuity – The "Salzburg Reading Desk (SRD)"

Summary

The determination of reading acuity is still the most important clinical examination, whenever the potential benefits of "presbyopic surgery" are compared. Reading distance – the by far most critical parameter in testing reading acuity – seems to be quite variable for every patient tested, whenever patients are allowed to freely choose a subjectively convenient reading distance. Therefore, measuring reading acuity with fixed reading distance does not allow conclusions to be drawn on the "every-day reading ability" of individual patients. Since 2004, the University Eye Clinic of Salzburg has been continuously working on the development of a standardized device, which enables clinicians and researchers to systematically evaluate every patients individual reading acuity under standardized conditions.
