Abstract

Stem cell-based regenerative therapies are promising options for tissue reconstruction. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are often confronted with large bone defects after tumor resection, in the treatment of alveolar clefts and in augmentation of atrophic bone before inserting dental implants. Such defects are often treated with autologous transplants. There are many auspicious experimental designs for successful concepts in animal trials. This review article summarizes the published clinical trials on stem cell-based treatment in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
