Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
An efficient removal of biofilm is essential for the prophylaxis and therapy of dental caries and periodontal diseases. New designs for toothbrush heads are continually being invented to ensure the simplicity and efficiency of tooth cleaning. The aim of this study was to evaluate the plaque reduction using the electric toothbrush Oral-B® Triumph 5500 combined with the Oral-B® TriZone toothbrush head compared to the already established toothbrush head Oral-B® Precision Clean.
Material and Method
Participants were first instructed in the techniques of toothbrushing using the respective toothbrush heads. After an abstinence of dental hygiene for 4 days the objects under test were used by participants in a cross-over design and the amount of plaque reduction was determined using the Rustogi et al. Modified Navy Plaque Index (RMNPI). In addition, information on domestic dental hygiene, the perceived hardness grade of the toothbrush heads, the handling and the perceived cleaning effect was collated using a questionnaire.
Results
A total of 9 female and 13 male dental students participated in this study. Both toothbrush heads achieved a statistically significant reduction of the RMNPI. The Precision Clean head attained a mean plaque reduction of 62.31 % ± 3.3 % which was 4.1 % higher compared to the TriZone (p < 0.001). The Precision Clean head also showed a statistically significant greater mean reduction of plaque at the facial approximal area of 47.56 % ± 5.9 % which was 4.28 % higher than the TriZone head (p = 0.0226) but no significant differences were observed for the lingual approximal area (p = 0.116). When asked which toothbrush head was considered to be the best 86 % decided for the Precision Clean head. In this study the Precision Clean head was found to be superior to the TriZone head with respect to plaque reduction, under the condition that patients are thoroughly instructed.
