Abstract
The present article compares the Austrian education practices and teacher education to the International Teacher Education for Primary Schools (ITEPS, Meppel) and discusses the teaching practices taught at the university. These practices include student-centered inquiry-based, design-based learning, where schoolchildren and students construct and explore their own learning. The ITEPS students are taught not to try to change the schoolchildren but to adapt teaching methods to suit each individual schoolchild. The offering of a selection of possible options in terms of content, process and product follows the concept of the universal design for learning framework and enables all schoolchildren to take part in the learning based on their abilities. It is important for teachers to take time to build a relationship with schoolchildren and get to know their strengths, needs and interests so that they can be effectively supported.
