Seit nunmehr 45 Jahren wird in Österreich erfolgreich ein Präventivprogramm zur Erfassung von angeborenen metabolischen und endokrinen Krankheiten durchgeführt. Das Ziel ist es, jedes in Österreich geborene Kind wenige Tage nach der Geburt (3. bis 5. Lebenstag) zu untersuchen, um bei Verdacht so rasch wie möglich eine qualitätsgesicherte Therapie zu initiieren. Dieses Programm wird im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für Gesundheit an der Universitätsklinik für Kinder- und Jugendheilkunde (Vorstand: Prof. Dr. Arnold Pollak), MedUniWien, seit 1966 durchgeführt.
