The journal publishes different types of contributions: Original research articles, state-of-the-art review papers, book reviews, discussions and technical notes. To make it easier for authors to choose the type of contribution, some information on the publication of technical notes is given below. Detailed instruction can be found in the guidelines for authors on the journal’s website.

A Technical Note is a short research article which permits the authors to share innovative ideas that have immediate impact on research and applications in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering. A Technical Note can therefore be a brief description of a technical innovation or a technical development, a specific aspect of a wider study, new findings or insights related to already published work, new instruments or innovative techniques.

The scientific standards of technical notes are the same as for full-length paper. The originality and the significance of the proposed contribution, the quality of the writing and of the illustrations are essential features for a Technical Note to be published in the journal. By no means are Technical Notes inferior to full-length papers, only their scope is different, as outlined above.

The length of the text should not exceed 3000 words. The title, authors, affiliations, highlights, abstract, keywords, text in tables, captions and references are excluded from the word count. The number of figures should be limited to no more than 6. The limited length of the Technical Note makes it possible to reduce the time of the review process and ensures that the contributions get published quickly.
