Roof Deformation, Failure Characteristics, and Preventive Techniques of Gob-Side Entry Driving Heading Adjacent to the Advancing Working Face

Abstract

In mining excavation, the roof bending subsidence of gob-side entry driving heading adjacent to the advancing working face (HAWF) can be considerable. Influenced by the original rock pressure, the front and lateral abutment pressure of the adjacent working face, and the front abutment pressure of the current working face, the support body can easily fail, leading to serious instability of the rock mass surrounding the tunnel. To study the stress state and the deformation failure mechanism of the HAWF roof structure, we use on-site survey data, numerical simulation, and theoretical calculations to fit the spatial distribution law of mining abutment pressure piecewise, and establish a dynamic mechanical model of the roof structure. We then propose a roof failure criterion and examine the roof flexure deformation behavioral pattern. We found that the central part of the roof is the main point that controls the surrounding rock. To prevent the deformation and collapse of the roof and rock surrounding the tunnel, we propose techniques that can be applied to HAWF gob-side entry driving, including setting the coal pillar width, the driving stop and restart timing, and other control concepts.

1.1 A short glossary of terms

Tail entry:

It is the roadway arranged at one side of the district sublevel in the minefield which is mainly used to emit polluted air from working face

Head entry:

It is the roadway arranged at the other side of the district sublevel in the minefield which is mainly used to transport the coal mined form working face

Gob:

It is goaf, worked out section, the mined out area without support

Rib:

It is the coal wall on both sides of gob which is the interface between mined out area and unmined out area

Entry:

It is the horizontal drift arranged along the coal seam

Working face:

It is the place at which the coal is being mined

Coal pillar:

It is the coal area without mining plan which is left to keep safe in the mining activities

Panel:

It is the district area divided form horizon in minefield

Longwall face:

It is one type of working face layout which is larger than others in length

Driving:

It is an underground activity which is used to build an entry

HAWF:

It is “Heading Adjacent to the Advancing Working Face”. It means that the working face is advancing and located next to the gob side entry which is driving in front of the working face

A-SPZ:

It is the plastic zone with triangle shape which is static and additional compared with M-SPZ. Thus, we call it Additional Static Triangle Shaped Plastic Zone

M-SPZ:

It is the plastic zone with pear shape which is mobile with the advance of the adjacent to the advancing working face. Thus, we call it Mobile Pear Shaped Plastic Zone

S-SPZ:

It is the plastic zone with rectangle shape which is static with the advance of the adjacent to the advancing working face. Thus, we call it Static Rectangle Shaped Plastic Zone
