Dynamic Graciloplasty Resulting Fecal Continence Without Electrical Stimulation: Report of a Case

Abstract

A 32 year-old man received dynamic graciloplasty for fecal incontinence due to a pelvic fracture. The perception of stool was obtained soon after the colostomy closure. Defecography and a manometric study showed that the patient could contract the transposed gracilis muscle independently. While the resting anal canal pressure remained low (52 cmH₂O), he maintained excellent continence without stimulation. When stimulated, the anal canal pressure rose to 112 cmH₂O. Electrical stimulation is therefore not always necessary for a good function after dynamic graciloplasty.
