Abstract
Lesions of the abomasum can lower performances (meat production, milk production, and breeding potential) of affected animals and can also be associated with or directly established as cause of death. Ultrasonography is a safe method for the detection of lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, the samples were collected from fundus, body, and pyloric regions of the abomasum from 10 healthy sheep and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. All samples were processed through routine paraffin embedding technique, cut at 6 μm, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Histomorphometry of samples was done by Olympus microscope (BX1) and camera (DP25). Ultrasonography of the abomasum wall was performed with 8-MHz probe. Statistical analysis showed that there is no significant correlation between ultrasonography and histomorphometry. It seems possible that these results are due to unwanted changes to tissues during the preparation of the tissue samples including fixation, dehydration, and clearing.
