Summary

This paper summarizes the continuous impact of Ernst Wolner on the development of several new surgical methods at his department. By setting the initiative to establish lung transplantation as a new form of treatment for end stage lung diseases, he opened a wide field of completely new treatments that have meanwhile become routine. This pioneering clinical work was paralleled by intensive academic achievements that resulted from the daily confrontations with completely new diseases and problems.
