Abstract
Nutrient loading (eutrophication) and increasing water temperatures by global warming are the main stressors for lakes. The causes and consequences are complex and affect the abiotic and biotic environment. To monitor and evaluate these effects, regular sampling events are prerequisite as long-term data sets are fundamental for further management strategies. The monitoring of Lake Mondsee (Austria) has a long tradition and sheds light on the effects of eutrophication and climate warming. During the eutrophication phase in the late 1970s, the focus was mainly on nutrient loading (especially of phosphorus), oxygen concentration and algal production. At that time, nutrient loading peaked while oxygen concentration dropped and subsequently, algal and cyanobacterial blooms of Planktothrix rubescens appeared. After beginning with sewage treatments, the nutrient rich (eutrophic) status turned back steadily to a lower nutrient level (meso-oligotrophic). Since mid of the 1990s, an oxygen-depleted zone started to expand again in deep water layers despite low phosphorus levels. Detailed analyses of water temperatures revealed an increase in surface temperatures and changes of the mixing regime and the prolongation of the stratification period. Above the lake bottom, we observed again similar concentration levels of nutrients and oxygen found during eutrophication phase. These effects led to conclude that the ecosystem of Lake Mondsee has been already affected by climate warming. To keep the process of global warming under control and to protect our lakes for future generations, swift and sustainable action is mandatory.
