Summary
In public low-voltage grids, the protection of the general public is ensured by the safety measure TN system. In order to ensure sufficient operating current for the protection devices a sufficient low-ohmic closed loop in the zero sequence system must be provided in addition to a current source with adequate short circuit current capability. If the formation of autonomous low-voltage islands is intended, the tripping condition in the TN system must be guaranteed even under varying grid extensions. Normally, in ring main units the medium to low voltage transformer supplies both a low-ohmic zero sequence return path and the required current carrying capability. If such a transformer is not available, the tripping condition can be met by the combination of a grounding transformer in connection with a specially designed short current source.
