Summary

The majority of scientific publications on quantum key distribution focuses on quantum physics and quantum information theory. However, when it comes to aggregating and combining quantum cryptographic point-to-point links to form larger, real-world networked structures, the perception of the point-to-point link as cryptographic primitive is necessary. In this article we will analyze the typical characteristics of such a cryptographic primitive and show by means of the SECOQC quantum back bone network, how networks can be constructed with these building blocks.
