The electric drive train has a history lasting for about 100 years, also in industrial vehicles. The biggest success was the application of trolleybuses, due to the fact that the bus is anyway bound to a line which is at the same time a good condition for being linked to an overhead line. Battery storages have been usable only for small vehicles and special applications till today. With today's energy storage possibilities the hybrid drive train has a big potential, especially in the city bus operation cycle. Fuel cells will surely get their first widespread application in city buses although there is still some development necessary up to a real series application. Today there is worldwide a new interest in overhead line bound buses. Supported by the growing vehicle sizes they are considered as a cost effective and flexible alternative to metros.
