The application of electronic medical technology not only increased the capabilities of medical staff to care for patients but also brought some new safety-related risks and systems engineering issues, and technology management programs have evolved over the years in response. Software based medical technology should increase capabilities as well, and their impact on technology management programs needs examination.

Der Einsatz von elektronischen medizintechnischen Geräten hat nicht nur die Leistungsfähigkeit des medizinischen Personals bei der Patientenbetreuung verbessert, sondern hat auch sicherheitstechnische Gefahren und neue Herausforderungen an die Systemtechnik mit sich gebracht; in weiterer Folge haben sich als Reaktion darauf in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche Programme, die sich mit der genannten Problemstellung befassen, herausgebildet. Diese Programme sollten genauer untersucht werden. Weiters sollte auch Software-basierte Medizintechnik zur Leistungssteigerung beitragen.
