Abstract
In the present study, the microstructures in hot-dip Zn-(11, 22)% Al coating layer on steel sheets were investigated in order to clarify their solidification microstructure evolution process. There are two kinds of Zn-Al binary phase diagrams. One includes a peritectic reaction but another does not. In the Zn-Al binary phase diagram including peritectic reaction, the peritectic reaction should occur when the Al content is higher than 13%. In fact, the core-shell structure featuring the peritectic reaction was formed in dendrites of the hot-dip Zn-22%Al coating layer, but not in the hot-dip Zn-11%Al coating layer. This indicates that the Zn-Al binary phase diagram including the peritectic reaction is suitable for understanding the solidification microstructure evolution of hot-dip Zn-Al alloy coating steel sheets. The core region of the dendrites in 22Al easily corroded after a cyclic corrosion test. This indicated that the peritectic reaction greatly affects the corrosion resistance in Zn-Al coating steel sheets.
