Abstract
In the steel industry, new materials are being optimized regarding their toughness and ductility, among other things. Their technological characteristics are influenced in particular by the size, shape, and distribution of carbon-rich microstructural constituents, such as martensite, retained austenite, and carbides. Their efficient and at the same time precise description is a demanding task, which requires a continuous development of metallographic methods.
A suitable contrast method enables the precise and reliable display and description of carbon-rich phases using light and electron microscopy. Using 3% alcoholic picric acid, only carbon-rich structural components of the samples were etched without etching grain boundaries.
This sample preparation allows an efficient, quantitative image analysis, since, especially with finely distributed and very small portions of carbon-free microstructural constituents, the disturbing influence of grain boundaries does not occur. For this purpose, a self-developed software based on ImageJ and Matlab is used. This software is easy to use, allows extensive evaluations, and can be flexibly adapted.
