Abstract
With a length of about 32.9 km, the double-tube Koralm tunnel represents the core of the high-capacity railway line between Graz and Klagenfurt. The tunnel passes through the Koralpe mountain range with a maximum overburden of about 1.200 m.
The site KAT2, the largest of three construction contracts, is specified by the use of two double shield tunnel boring machines. They are responsible for the excavation of 17 respectively 18 km of tunnel drive. The geological and geotechnical conditions such as fault zones, high compressive rock strength and water inflow pose a challenge in the excavation.
The twin-bore Koralm tunnel will produce about 8.6 mio. t of excavated material. For this reason, the maximum degree of material recycling has been intended right from the start of the design process. This was planned including consideration of the optimal cost-effectiveness of overall material management with minimal environmental impact, through the minimization of transport processes and land use, as well as generally sparing use of resources. Most of the excavated material is used for the production of aggregates for concrete. This article deals with the status quo at the site KAT2 by december 2016.
