Abstract
To investigate the effect of increased SiO2-contents in the slag, comparative ESR-(electro-slag-remelting)-experiments were performed at a laboratory scale low-frequency ESR-plant. Thereby the effect of the SiO2-content on the specific energy consumption and the chemical composition of the ingot and the slag as well as changes in the composition of the non-metallic inclusions were investigated. Higher SiO2-contents lead to a reduced loss of Si in the steel and result in increased energy consumption. Furthermore the refining effect of the slag regarding non-metallic inclusions is slightly reduced, and the newly formed inclusions possess a higher SiO2-content.
