Summary
The so-called technological metals (rare earths, refractory and precious metals, etc.) are of enormous importance for today's world, because they are essential for the manufacture of many products. However, the price development for rare earths over the last two years has shown that the supply of raw materials for these elements is not ensured. In addition, a development and expansion of future technologies (windmills, electric and hybrid cars, photovoltaic, fuel cells, etc.) is predicted and the recycling of technological metals stands apart from a few exceptions only at the beginning. Therefore, the extraction, application and recycling of technological metals represents an important important focus at the Chair of Nonferrous Metallurgy, Montanuniversitaet Leoben, to find proper solutions for these tasks.
