Summary
Numerical simulation is nowadays becoming a standard tool in industrial processes. This paper provides an insight into the usage of finite element calculations in the development and production process in the steel mill of Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG, Kapfenberg, Austria. Simulation methods are used all along the process chain of a tool steel at the mill, starting with melting and casting of the steel and ending up with the examination of hot forming and heat treatment processes. The development of numerical models to describe the casting and solidification of the electrodes used for remelting is still in progress. A validated simulation model for the remelting process i. e. vacuum arc remelting and protective gas electroslag remelting provides information on pool depth and shape, mushy zone width and temperature distribution in the steady state region of the process. The forming of the cast and remelted steel block is done either in the rolling mill or in the forging shop. As an example simulation results (i. e. strains and temperatures in the workpiece) are presented for hot forming on the forging press. Concluding, heat treatment simulations are regarded.
