Abstract
Definition of the problem: In Dutch culture, morally complex matters are often dealt with in a pragmatic and procedural way as opposed to following a principled approach. The debate about end of life decisions that preceded the “Euthanasia Act” in 2002 is an example of this practice.
Arguments and conclusion: It can be said that the way The Netherlands is now dealing with terminal sedation (which can be considered as the new phase in the discussion about end of life decisions) also follows the principles of the “polder model”. Social and political participants cooperate to reach a common solution to the fact that the term “terminal sedation” refers to different practices and also different moral implications.
