Summary.
In the mass media there is an ever growing number of commentaries comparing and often equating psychotherapy, including psychoanalysis, to the use of a placebo. A superficial review would tend to agree with the laypress. A more thoughtful analysis shows, however, that there are decisive structural differences. This essay compares and contrasts psychotherapy and placebo use, and establishes more concise understandings of these two concepts.
