Abstract
Lifestyle drugs such as nicotine and alcohol and their influence on male fertility have been a matter of interest for many years. Moderate alcohol consumption has no harmful effect on male fertility, whereas heavy drinkers may develop severe testicular and endocrinological disturbances. The effect of cigarette smoking is the subject of controversy. As a concomitant negative influence on an existent fertility disturbance cannot be excluded, patients should be advised to reduce their cigarette consumption, not the least because of the increasing number of reports on the potential risk that paternal smoking may cause childhood cancer in the offspring. Knowledge about the influences of drugs on fertility is scarce. Endocrinological disturbances such as development of gynecomastia and reduction of testosterone concentration have been reported; more severe effects were observed in animal experiments. Many pharmaceuticals can impair male fertility. The deleterious effect of cytostatic agents on spermatogenesis is well known. Few studies have been conducted on the potential influence exerted by drugs on defined sperm functions.
