This special issue of Probability Theory and Related Fields is published in celebration of the life and work of Harry Kesten. A number of Harry’s colleagues and fellow probabilists have contributed research articles on topics close to Harry’s own interests. The issue begins with a bibliography of Harry’s papers and books, followed by a survey of his many contributions to probability theory (and beyond).

We are grateful to the Springer editorial team for their enthusiasm for this commemorative issue, and to the numerous individuals who have selflessly refereed the articles appearing here.

We acknowledge Cornell University and Itai Benjamini for their pictures of Harry reproduced above. The photograph was taken in Harry’s office in White Hall around 1980, and the sketch by Itai was made in recent years.
