There are few ways to acknowledge and highlight research in zoological morphology. Probably, the most prominent one is the Reinhard Rieger Award, which is distributed since 2008. It is named after the prominent and influential zoologist Reinhard Rieger (1943–2006).

Until 2019, the award was organized by the two major journals in research on animal morphology, Journal of Morphology (Wiley) and Zoomorphology (Springer). Both publishers, together with the University of Innsbruck and Dr. Roland Rieger, donated the prize money and a committee consisting of the Chief Editors of both journals, Dr. Gunde Rieger, Prof. Wilfried Westheide and Dr. Peter Ladurner organized the selection of articles and external review. Since 2008, a number of excellent papers were honored with the Reinhard Rieger Award (see http://www.uibk.ac.at/zoology/reinhard-rieger-award/index.html.de).

Last year, Wiley Publishers decided to step out of the award, but fortunately, Springer decided to continue it with slight modifications (see http://www.springer.com/journal/435/updates/17240028). Therefore, from 2020 on, papers published in Zoomorphology over the past 12 months (or 4 issues) are eligible for the Reinhard Rieger Award. We are glad that this important award is continued and thank the University of Innsbruck and Dr. Rieger for their continuous support. We look forward to the next award winner.
