Neuro-Ophthalmology is a unique subspecialty merging neurology and ophthalmology into a very comprehensive field.

The title describes the contents of the book in a straightforward manner, overview of Neuro-Ophthalmology with over 600 wonderful illustrations, and 69 demonstrative video clips.

This paperback of 21 chapters and 694 pages includes a very clear 5-page table of contents and a very detailed 15-page index is provided at the end of the text.

The text starts with neuro-ophthalmic and funduscopic examinations, visual fields, commonly used ancillary testing methods, and an overview of visual loss. Subsequent chapters detail a wide array of conditions including retinal vascular diseases, optic neuropathies, disc edema, disorders of higher cortical function, abnormal visual perceptions, diplopia, orbital syndromes, cavernous sinus and orbital vascular disorders, nystagmus/other ocular oscillations, and disorders of the eyelid. The final chapters are dedicated to nonorganic neuro-ophthalmic symptoms and signs, diagnosis of headache and facial pain, neurologic and systemic disorders that commonly have neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations, and an approach to management of the visually impaired patient. It is well updated with cutting edge neuro-imaging, OCT, and laboratory tests.

This is an outstanding well-written and easy-to-read illustrated textbook in which almost each one of the pages contains a photograph, illustration, flowchart, or table which will serve as an excellent reference for neurologists, neurosurgeons, and general ophthalmologists at all levels of training. The boxes titled “pearls” succinctly highlight “take-home” points.

The authors stated in the preface their intention to provide the essential information on basic clinical Neuro-Ophthalmology and to simplify the perceived complexity of the subject. They have magnificently succeeded.

In sum, this book is a true masterpiece; I will certainly recommend it to my students, residents, and general ophthalmologist colleagues.
